Trained in mechanical engineering (BS) and mechatronics (MSE) at Stanford University, Kai worked as a product designer and interface designer (TiVo) in Silicon Valley before pursuing an MFA at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts.

Since completing his film studies, Kai has written for top Hollywood producers including Barry Sonnenfeld (Men in Black I, II, III),  Philippe Rousselet (Lord of War, Source Code), and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones (Insidious, Take Shelter) as well as, developed, produced, or directed several smaller feature projects.

SPLINTER (2008) received glowing critical praise from the New York Times (A.O. Scott) and Entertainment Weekly and won best picture, best directing, and best editing at Screamfest (2008).  

JUKO'S TIME MACHINE (2012) A “…sweet little indie gem [with] a cast of six, a wealth of imagination, and a love story that is impossible to resist.”  -- Huffington Post.  JTM also won the audience award at the San Francisco Independent Film Festival.  

NEWCOMER (2015) A spy thriller shot in Serbia.  It world premiered at the Raindance festival in London in September and will be receiving it's North American premiere at the Austin Film Festival.

Kai lives and writes in Brooklyn.
